The women are sweltering in the heat, but Lorelei brings Lexie her own electric fan as approved by the Governor. Kath tells Vicki to fake an attack of nausea, sending the naive officer on duty after her. She demands the fan from Lexie with a threat of violence and makes a point of noting that Rita is sitting there doing nothing to stop her. Rodney volunteers to help fight the bush fires. Rita refuses to get involved in the dispute with Kath, despite Alice's attempts to persuade her. Nancy tells Alice and Rita she's heard Danielle crying when Peter took the phone away from her. Joan tells Mervin and Joyce she's signing the papers to buy their flat, but they have to point out they might not be able to move out straight away (or, in fact, at all...). Marty reacts tetchily to Rodney's snide remarks about what he was doing while others were fighting the fires. Kath orders Rita to operate the press for her due to the heat. Nancy gets a letter from Peter telling her not to worry, which has the opposite effect. Marty talks to a maintenance man at the prison who makes him feel even more guilty for not getting involved with the fire fighting. Rodney talks to Kath as she's taking a shower : she flirts with him and asks him to open a bank account for her on the outside. Lorelei finally gets through to Rita, who decides she ought to cheer up a bit for other people's sake. Nancy asks Meg to visit Danielle. During the exercise period, Rita plays with the hose and sprays Rodney. Lexie gets tipped out of a wheelbarrow which causes a moment of panic. Kath offers to lay bets with the TAB for a percentage of any bets laid. Rita sees the Conquerors on TV and changes her mind about helping with the fire: Meg suggests the women help Mervin make sandwiches for the fire fighters. Alice slips love letters into the sandwiches she makes. Rodney tells Marty he's volunteered him to help by taking his place, having had his suspicions aroused by Delia telling him not to push Marty too hard on the issue. Meg fails to persuade Marty to change his mind. Rodney is worried what other people will think when even Merle has noticed that he's always hanging around Kath. Rita rejects Lexie's idea that they try to get Merle away from Kath's influence by offering to let her join the Warriors: she points out that there are no Warriors anymore. Kath persuades Rodney to lay the bets for her. When Ann gets home she finds Dan waiting for her: he has come out of hospital a week early and has nowhere to stay because he let his own flat go. Mervin has to tell Joan that the finance on their home has fallen through, but she still demands that they move out. Merle is fascinated when Lexie lets her feel the baby kicking. Joyce stands up to Joan and tells her they are not moving out so she will have to get used to the idea. Dan tells Ann that he's fallen in love with a nurse who looked after him at the hospital. After the women are locked up for the night, Lexie goes into labour .
